MEET THE COACH
I’m Matt, owner of Modus. I'm a Level 3 Personal Trainer with over 12 years' experience. Before becoming a private PT, I worked in a range of commercial gyms, most recently as a Platinum Trainer at David Lloyd. I now train clients at my private home studio in Guildford, Surrey, where I live with my wife and daughter.
I specialise in strength training, powerlifting and bodybuilding, but I also incorporate high intensity interval training (HIIT) for conditioning. I practice what I preach and I will never give you a workout I wouldn’t do myself!
Having worked with a wide variety of clients with a range of goals and abilities, I understand the importance of reacting to how each person responds to the training program I’m giving them, to ensure each workout is appropriate and effective. This involves keeping sessions enjoyable and putting your individual goals at the forefront of our training.



WHAT I OFFER
A free consultation and studio tour
Start by booking in a consultation to find out what I can do for you. This will include a show around the studio and a talk through my equipment.
1-1 personal training
One hour 1-1 personal training sessions catered towards your specific goals and abilities, incorporating a range of resistance training and conditioning. Sessions take place in person in my home studio.
A fully kitted out private PT studio
Commercial grade gym equipment including a range of free weights and functional kit in an air-conditioned, newly refurbished studio space.
Nutritional guidance
Once we’ve defined your goals, I will set you nutritional targets and help you monitor them, whether it's weight loss, weight gain or improving your general health. These are regularly reviewed to ensure you’re staying on track.
Body composition tracking
I encourage my clients to track their progress with a combination of body weight tracking, physique pictures and measurements so we can accurately gauge results.
For me, fitness goes beyond just looking good. It's about feeling better, both physically and mentally. Sessions with me are challenging and I will always ensure you're pushing yourself! I will also hold you accountable by staying in touch outside of sessions to make sure you stay on track. Calories and macronutrients are hugely important, whatever your goals are. I encourage clients who want to improve their eating habits to track their nutrition - something I will monitor and advise on.
As well as being challenging, sessions will also be interesting and engaging and I will regularly shake things up to ensure your progress doesn't stall. I have plenty of equipment to keep things fresh. Keeping training morale high is crucial and making sure you are enjoying your sessions is a huge factor in whether or not you achieve your goals. I will work around your lifestyle to ensure we set up a plan you can stick to, whether it's in your sessions with me, or when you're exercising on your own. I use 'End of block' reviews to get feedback on how you feel your training is going.
A good consultation is essential when starting out with a PT. I like to fully understand your goals and your motivations. I don't use 'cookie cutter' workouts and the more I know about your fitness history, past/current injuries and your exercise likes/dislikes, the more effective I can make our training. THE STUDIO
So what are the benefits of a private studio? Gyms are great, but they get busy and can be intimidating if you're a beginner. Maybe the lack of available equipment means you stick to the same workouts every time you go. Personal training in a private studio could be the perfect place for you to get out of your comfort zone, try new equipment and start expanding your fitness repertoire. (There's also no gym membership fee!)
My equipment includes a power rack for barbell exercises, a pull up bar, bench, adjustable dumbbells (2.5kg-40kg), a cable pulley machine, and a range of functional kit including kettlebells, a plyo box, suspension straps, and slam balls.
I encourage many of my clients to learn and work on compound barbell lifts, such as squats and deadlifts, as these are some of the most effective exercises regardless of your fitness goals - this isn’t as daunting as it sounds, and once you get the hang of it and start feeling stronger it is an awesome feeling. But wherever you are in your fitness journey, I have kit that will work for you.
